Download the New Urban Agenda: A Milestone in Sustainable Urban Development

The United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III) held from October 17 to 20, 2016, in Quito, Ecuador, marked a significant milestone in the history of urbanization. The conference culminated in the adoption of the New Urban Agenda, a comprehensive plan aimed at addressing the pressing challenges faced by cities worldwide.

The Habitat III process was characterized by extensive consultations and negotiations that took place during the intersessional period. A revised zero draft was prepared based on inputs from broad regional and thematic consultations, as well as policy recommendations elaborated by policy units and comments received from participating states and stakeholders.

The New Urban Agenda is a testament to the commitment of governments, local authorities, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to work together towards sustainable urban development. The agenda acknowledges that urbanization has been a major driver of development and poverty reduction throughout modern history.

The conference was attended by over 30,000 people from 167 countries, including international participants, government officials, local authorities, and representatives of civil society organizations. During the four-day event, almost 1,000 events took place, including plenary sessions, high-level roundtable discussions, assemblies, stakeholder roundtables, policy dialogues, special sessions, urban talks, and exhibitions.

The adoption of the New Urban Agenda is a significant step towards achieving sustainable urban development. The agenda emphasizes the importance of inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities, and provides a framework for governments to implement policies and strategies that promote urban development.
